All across the country, jobs are widely available for anyone with a nursing degree. The United States is experiencing a considerable nursing shortage, and has been for several years.

The nursing shortage has been happening for a few reasons. First of all, nursing is quite a demanding profession. It is not easy to be a nurse - most nurses work long and hard hours, often working overtime or double shifts. As well, many people are not very pleasant to nurses a lot of the time; nurses tend to have to handle the brunt of patients' bad attitudes. There also are not very many nursing schools. If there were more nursing schools, perhaps the nursing shortage would not be as big of a problem.

In any case, the nursing shortage does work out for people who have just earned their nursing degrees - it gives these people the pick of the market. These new nurses can do some searching around and choose whatever job they feel is best, rather than resorting to taking whatever job is available. Jobs are plentiful, both in doctor's offices and hospitals. Nurses can also find jobs in nursing homes, dentist offices, and other medical establishments. The job market is wide open, and the nurses have the upper hand.

Because of this, when looking for a job, nurses can often negotiate for the best job terms. Many advertised jobs offer sign-on bonuses, sometimes as much as several thousand dollars. Some offer specific hourly working arrangements, or shared job situations, or any number of other possible perks. So, when a new nurse begins to entertain job offers, she can take the advertised perks from other job offers and try to negotiate those terms into another job's contract. This way, a nurse can come away with the best possible job position.

By continuing her education after employment, either online or on campus, a nurse can ensure her opportunities for advancement, especially in a hospital environment. In fact, this is the best way for a nurse to rise up the ranks in any medical establishment that employs a great number of nurses. After all, the more schooling a nurse has the more valuable she is as a nurse. Of course, experience counts, too, so it is not wise to hop around from job to job unless absolutely necessary, regardless of sign-on bonuses. This will not look good to any employer.
